Rhythm & Phase

These works are inspired by minimal music composition of the mid to late sixties and its continued use in experimental electronic music today. This compositional technique uses a minimal palette overlapping of repeating sounds, pulses and drones that often move in and out of phase with each other creating evolving soundscapes that shift over time.

These wooden relief sculptures are my response to those compositional techniques. Here I am trying to create a visual companion to that aural idea. Rather than attempting to directly transcribe specific pieces of music into a sculptural form I am attempting to express a similar feeling. I hope that they provide the viewer with an active experience in which the eye might initially attempt to find a repeating pattern by settling on a specific element but is carried through the piece to find that no true repetition exists.
